Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Africa Regional Sexuality Resource Center (ARSRC) is a project aimed at giving visibility, depth and legitimacy to the field of sexuality in Africa. ARSRC aims to promote informed public dialogue on human sexuality and to contribute to positive changes in the emerging field of sexuality in Africa, by creating mechanisms for learning at the regional level.
Communication Strategies
The project focuses on four countries in Africa: Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa. A Nigeria-based non-governmental organisation facilitates activities and is hosting the centre. The project has two major components:
  • convening an international working group on sexuality and social policy that will work to stimulate global policy debate related to sexuality, sexual health and sexual rights and to promote interfacing between key actors and social movements, and
  • establishing a regional sexuality resource centres located in the four regions: Africa, Asia, Latin America and North America, to work on sexuality research and advocacy aimed at strengthening national and regional efforts.
The ARSRC activities include providing:
  • financial support to its participants
  • information technology equipment and support as well as databases housed within the Africa Regional Sexuality Resource Centre
  • opportunities for the exchange of experiences and ideas from the “best minds” in the field
  • opportunities for networking and development of beneficial professional linkages in the field of sexuality.
Development Issues
