After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Asian Development Bank HIV/AIDS Prevention Activies - Cambodia, Lao PDR, Viet Nam

Community-based HIV/AIDS prevention activities will be implemented in Cambodia, Lao People's Democratic Republic (PDR) and Viet Nam in a bid to decrease the impact of the epidemic in the region through a US$8 million grant approved by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The project will target high-risk groups including migrants and mobile groups such as fishing communities, transport, sex and hospitality workers, police and military personnel and construction workers who are vulnerable to HIV infection due to their work, living environment and lack of social support.
Communication Strategies

The project aims to provide a comprehensive range of HIV/AIDS prevention activities in strategic areas or "hot spots" where HIV is easily transmitted and strengthen the capacity of national and local HIV authorities and selected nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) to develop community-based prevention and care programs. The community-based activities include:
  • Behavior change communication activities for host communities and mobile populations;
  • Promoting the use of condoms through social marketing; and
  • Care and management of sexually transmitted infection (STI).
The project will also support capacity-building activities that include development of models for AIDS care in Cambodia which can be adapted in the other two countries; training teachers and community workers on HIV/AIDS prevention and control; and facilitate learning from Thailand's experience.

Key Points

HIV/AIDS infection is a major challenge in Cambodia, Lao PDR and Viet Nam, affecting almost all provinces and population. The share of HIV/AIDS-related illnesses in the sub-region is expected to triple in the next 20 years, unless preventive measures are undertaken.

The grant will be financed through the Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction (JFPR). The ADB will finance 80 percent of the total cost of the Project while the governments of the three countries will finance the balance. The Ministries of Health in Cambodia and Lao PDR and the National Committee for Population and Family Planning in Viet Nam will be executing agencies for the TA, scheduled for completion in June 2003.

I presume that we have not met neither have we communicated before.Firstly,
my name is Mary Okonta I am the wife of late Micheal Okonta . My late husband
Micheal Okonta who was a business tycoon based here in Cote d' Ivoire was
also the chairman Executive Hills Hotels died last month at the age of 49
after a brief illness at Eko Hospital here in Cote D'Ivoire Could you believe
that the tradition and costum of the town and state where my late husband
came from demands that any woman who does not have a male child for the
husband, that when ever the husband dies, all the properties including cash
will be shared among the late husband brothers and the woman will be sent
out the husband house for good.

My dear, this is exactly what I am going through right now since last month
my husband died. My late husband brothers has taken all the properties
belonging to my late husband including bank account and as well sent me
out of my husband house just because I do not have a male child for my
late husband. This is a weaked tradition and believe.As am talking to you

I and my two daughters are going through hell at the moment.Right now, I
am having in my possition all the vital documents relating to the sum of
$9.5 million dollars which my late husband deposited with a One the Security
Company in Europe , in a truck boxes as family valuables and he made all
the vital documents with my name as the next of kin before his death.For
your information we did not disclosed the real content of the boxes to the
security company and we do not wish them to know the contend of the truck
boxes for security seasons. last week I contacted the manager of the Security
Company and I was told that the truck bosex is very much intact, that I
can as well come for it any time I feel like.Please remember that I cannot
make use of this fund here due to forces surounding me at the moment. Please
have mercy at the poor widow like me and help me out of this mess.
