Attacking Poverty Forum - Global

The purpose of this online discussion is to involve the general public and a broad group of representatives from Civil Society Organizations (CSO) from developing and transition countries in an open and frank dialogue around the proposed focus for the WDR on Poverty and Development. The World Bank welcomes a diversity of comments, suggestions and ideas which at this very early stage of the WDR process can only serve to improve the quality and sharpen the focus of the report. In addition, the discussion will be valuable in itself as a forum in which the public and CSO representatives can exchange views on such a critical subject among themselves and with staff from the World Bank.

Economic development.

The World Development Report 2000/ will be on Poverty and Development. The WDR 2000/1 presents an opportunity to revisit the World Bank's poverty reduction strategy in light of the events of the last fifteen years. One of its major goals is on incorporating poor peoples' own experiences of poverty and responses to it. It will also go beyond standard economic analysis and reach out to the insights and contributions of other social sciences, as it tries to better understand the design and implementation of successful institutions, mechanisms and policies for resolving the tension between the opportunities and risks for poverty reduction. Discussions in the Development Forum are open to participants from around the world. In order to assure that those with limited Internet access can participate, these dialogues are conducted by means of moderated email lists, archived to the Development Forum web site.
