Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

"Communication Strategies in Health: Let's Work Together! Health Sector Reform as Priority Issue and Starting Point for a Partnership" was a consultation seminar held by the Ministry of Health and WHO-Europe in Chisinau on 18-19 August 1998. The seminar was developed to address the issues of insufficient awareness of proposed health care reforms, lack of communication between the Ministry of Health and mass media, lack of interaction between mass media and NGOs, and lack of a clear, developed strategy of health communication in the Republic of Moldova..
Communication Strategies

Two days of discussion/workshops, participants of which included: republican mass media representatives (journalists writing on health issues, national and private TV and radio specialised programmes broadcasters, informational and advertising agencies employees); Ministry of Health representatives responsible for communication with mass media and reforms implementation; NGO's representatives, public organisations representatives (ie: UNICEF, Family Planning Association, Women's League); educational and scientific institutions representatives connected with health communication.
Development Issues

Health issues, dissemination of information about existing and planned health reforms.
Key Points

Principal objectives were: to inform in detail the participants of the seminar about the contents, goals and expected outcomes of the planned reforms and about the possible ways and methods of their implementation; to unite the main partners involved in health communication; to create a resourceful working team in order to encourage the population to participate in health communication; to make the work of journalists writing on health issues more active; to develop health communication strategy; and, to introduce the participants to the experience of implementation of analogous reforms and their highlighting in mass media abroad.
