Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

CompuTainer HIV Awareness Training Kiosks

CompuTainer HIV Awareness Training Kiosks is a project run by a South African company that works with small, medium, and large companies in Africa to raise levels of awareness about HIV/AIDS. CompuTainer uses the kiosk technology in an effort to communicate needed messages and to help kiosk users increase their understanding of HIV/AIDS. Kiosks are placed across South Africa and maintained by trained youth.
Communication Strategies

The kiosk is made from rugged, high-impact steel and manufactured in the country. It can be powder-coated in any colour combinations and may be branded in any way desired. CompuTainer works with local computer manufacturers to ensure that specifications and screen sizes are compatible with the kiosks. Kiosks can be fitted with condom dispensing devices if requested.

The company works with unemployed youth to set up and maintain the kiosks. After intensive training, teams of two individuals are appointed to maintain each 50 kiosks in a geographical region. The teams are funded with transport and tools-of-the-trade to provide first-level support in the field. The teams also have the ability to swap damaged units and bring them back to centralised centres for second-level support.

The project organiser works with local authorities to identify suitable placement sites for the kiosks. "These sites are normally selected for the corporate companies; however CompuTainer will also work with the companies and local authorities if they wish to select their own sites. Due to the secure design of the kiosk they can be placed in open areas."

"CompuTainer works with local community leaders and the CompuTainer Maintenance Teams, to maintain the kiosks and to ensure the ongoing commitment from the community to support the facilities. To ensure the ongoing sustainability of those facilities CompuTainer retains the sole right to advertise on the kiosks. All monies collected from advertising rights are used to support and maintain the facilities."
