Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Economic Communications - Nicaragua

A highly-polarized and inexperienced government was approached to help them get their economic and social messages across, and to de-politicize economic dialogue. The project aimed to improve public understanding and environment for social reforms, to politicize public dialogue on economic and social issues, and to provide ongoing two-way dialogue between government and civil society.
Communication Strategies

Short term: intense training of government economic spokespeople, opinion research using top international consultants. Long term: develop a medium to long-term strategy based on opinion research. Local capacity for media relations was built, also for systematic economic and social dialogue.

Economic and social communications
Key Points

In Nicaragua, the government was new and inexperienced, and was embarking on ambitious and badly needed reforms. In a region with a highly polarized political situation, and economic ideology the centerpiece of contention, reforms to the economic and social communications were needed.
