Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Fundación Puntos de Encuentro (Meeting Places Foundation) - Nicaragua

Fundación Puntos de Encuentro is a feminist organisation devoted to communication, research, and education. It is made up of a multicultural, multidisciplinary team of male and female adults and youth who have different sexual preferences and who live in diverse social conditions. A central focus of this group's work is power relations in daily life. The Foundation's objective is to help disarm power relations based on people's different social conditions: sex, age, social class, race, physical traits, territory, sexual preference, etc., thus promoting equity in diversity.
Communication Strategies

Puntos de Encuentro specialises in:

  • preparing massive education campaigns for the purpose of creating a favorable environment for the improvement of public opinion toward women, male and female youth, lesbians and homosexuals, and for their rights as citizens
  • contributing to civilian sector group analysis and making public policy proposals with a feminist and generational focus
  • contributing to the active promotion of a democratic, transparent political culture in the social movements and networks to which it belongs.

In addition, the Foundation has conducted research on men who systematically exercise control over or mistreat (physically, emotionally, or sexually) the woman with whom they live. Educational workshops and meetings for men are provided by Cantera, Grupo de Hombres contra la Violencia de Managua (The Managua Men's Group against Violence), and Fundación Puntos de Encuentro.

Using the technique of educational entertainment, the Foundation produced a TV series called "Sexto Sentido" ("Sixth Sense") that was first broadcast in 2001 and that has recently been rebroadcast on 11 local TV channels. A radio series with the same name has been broadcast for the past eight years. It combines music and discussion of topics about the daily life of young men and women, with a focus on gender that is anti-authority. It offers an open line for youngsters to speak out on issues that are important to them, including topics that are taboo.

The Foundation also produces La Boletina, a feminist magazine with national coverage. The Foundation's manual, "Somos Diferentes Somos Iguales (SDSI)" ("We Are Different, We Are Equal"), is also widely distributed.
