Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Girls Go Global - Global

Girls Go Global is an initiative to bring together contemporary and popular culture images of global feminism. Women and girls worldwide are encouraged to include their creative work by completing an online submission process before December 1 2004. Organisers describe their goal as follows: "To provide a contemporary and edgy representation of global feminism(s) that is easily accessible for young women and those new to feminism(s)".
Communication Strategies
Girls Go Global relies on the participation of women and girls, to the end of demystifying feminism and fostering an engaging connection with the term. Those interested in creating and sharing representations of global feminist popular culture are encouraged to share their visions for a better future by sending in their words, essays (not more than 3000 words), photos, art, images, and multimedia depictions of feminism. The collection will be included in several exhibitions (already held in Sydney, Bangkok and Mexico) around the world and one final exhibition in New York in early 2005 as a part of the celebrations for Beijing +10. Organisers anticipate that the collection will include a variety of positive, empowering images that represent women of different ages, cultures, and backgrounds.

The Internet is the key tool for soliciting, demonstrating, and exchanging submissions. An online entry form, available in English, French, and Spanish, is the medium through which women and girls may submit entries (by December 1 2004). (Entries may also be submitted via email - see contact address, below). Examples of submissions already received are posted on the website. This medium is part of a strategy of providing a context that values and celebrates non-conventional and non-academic ways of articulating the meaning of feminism.
