Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Increasing uptake of family planning

Uptake of family planning is crucial to safe motherhood. Increasing uptake of family planning method among women of reproductive age has been of concern in my country. I will be presenting an abstract on the role of behaviour change communication in increasing uptake of post partum family planning at the SBCC Summit in April. It will be an interesting experience.

Hi Oludolapo,

What kind of SBCC methods have you used to promote family planning? We've been working on educating adolescents through our platform Tune Me that's launched in several countries across sub-saharan Africa. I've also noticed that to get participants truly honest about their contraceptive use, I've often relied on role-play (I'll be presenting a workshop on that at SBCC). Would be great to share ideas and best practices!

Hi Estee,  the approach we used was InterPersonal Communication. We selected and trained women of reproductive age from the intervention communities. They were trained on family planning, communication skills and SBCC. A lot of women in the communities do not access family planning and this has been the norm. Reaching them one on one, addressing their barriers and supporting them to make the right choices has yielded good results over the  years.

I’m looking forward to hearing more about this topic at the SBCC Summit. How much influence does a woman’s partner have in decision making? In Swaziland, conversations about family planning often only involve women. This is influenced by many factors, but I find that women are more likely to present to a clinic in rural areas and have frequent visits for infant monitoring and vaccination after the birth of a child. Family planning is often discussed in conjunction with these visits.

Please don't underestimate the circle/social network  included partners of Women in this domain. They influence the decision and the continuity of FP use. With SBCC and Social network approach in Benin wie succeed to  dismantle social barriers and increase the Uptake of FP. The change is sustainable.
