Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Internews' Video Bridges - Bosnia - Herzegovina

Internews - Bosnia is focused on the effective use of video to bridge communities torn apart by war. Internews' mission in Bosnia-Herzegovina is to help electronic media throughout the country become responsible, professional, and ethnically tolerant sources of news and information; and to build viable electronic media organisations.
Communication Strategies

One production reunited by video a couple which were separated by the outbreak of fighting in Sarajevo. This was shown throughout the country on television as a means of demonstrating how war divides families and couples. Internews - Bosnia is now producing a peace-oriented television soap opera. The 1998-99 Internews - Bosnia programme is divided into 3 major components: television and radio station infrastructure building; broadcasters association building; and production company development. On a station-by-station basis, Internews improves technical facilities, works with institutions like Price-Waterhouse to privatize municipal media, and provides ongoing marketing, news training, and management training to station personnel.

Key Points

Internews training programs in Bosnia-Herzegovina raise the professional level of television and radio professionals while exposing them to issues of ethnic tolerance. At Internews trainings, multi-ethnic teams of journalists work collectively on problem-solving and production of news stories. Internews' training and direct support is limited to stations with Bosnia & Herzegovina, but it also has working relationships with broadcasters throughout the Balkans.
