Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

OneWorld Radio News Service - Global

OneWorld Radio News Service provides audio features and reports of up to half an hour in length about human rights and environmental issues free and worldwide via the Internet.
Communication Strategies

The service uses RealAudio technology to compress audio files so they are small enough to be transferred quickly over the Internet. Live ‘streaming' versions are also available, to enable broadcasters to quickly browse a selection of features and choose the ones which fit best into their programming schedule. Subscribers include braodcasters from state, commercial or community radio stations, and NGOs and development agencies worldwide who are using radio to share information and to communicate their ideas.

Key Points

"Media coverage of an event is too often based on whether CNN or other big networks are covering it. If the creation of the OneWorld Radio News Service means that programme-makers around the world have greater access to relevant environmental or human rights stories from places where there isn't a camera, then it is fulfilling a vital need" -Jonathan Marks, Director of Programmes, Radio Netherlands.
