A Sala Choritian for the Elderly - Cambodia
Sala means pavillion & choritian means charity or mercy. A special building erected as a gathering place & Buddhist retreat for the elderly functions as a haven in the preparation for death.
Communication Strategies
Unlike later generations, dying is part of life that has many spiritual implications for the ageing population. "Many of the world's cultures provide a religious approach to the progress into the Hereafter". The sala serves as a forum for discussion about the religious process of dying, meeting the needs of the elderly. In addition, areas within the building are set aside for meditation.

Key Points
The rights of Cambodia's ageing population are recognized as to how they wish to deal with death. If ignored, those close to dying would skip important cultural rituals which help to complete their time here on earth and would not feel prepared to enter the "Afterlife". "As a person senses that the journey into a new existence is imminent, a monk can be called to the sala to help with instruction & prayer". The salas are not a new idea but "many of the ancient salas have deteriorated or been polluted by traffic noise". The salas are full of life, with bells ringing to summon their elder members for meetings. Funerals are an important community event which cost more money than some can afford. Money was graduallyraised by sala members for the purchase of 500 plates & fairy lights as rentals for cultural community feasts. Money raised by the rentals is contributed to funeral costs; a comfort to those who would otherwise be unable to afford the funeral style they desired.
