Social Norms
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Spot Sur La Paix

Spot Sur La Paix is a short radio public service announcement or "spot" produced in Burundi to advocate for peace. It was produced in March 2003 and broadcast on eight radio stations during the course of 2003 in Burundi. Produced with primary school children in Bujumbura, the spot was based on a text written by the Studio Ijambo production team and was one of several that they produced during this time.
Communication Strategies
The spot was essentially an "advertisement for peace" appealing to adults to keep in mind a common purpose in the time of transition from a Tutsi President to a Hutu President. Studio Ijambo worked with primary school children to develop the spot in order to capture the voice of the children within the context of the tension and violence surrounding the transition.

Key Points
The spot was produced during a time of high tension just prior to the handover of power from a Tutsi President to a Hutu President. There was severe tension and violence around the country and children were amongst the primary victims of this violence. In many situations, they were no longer able to attend school or travel freely due to the violence. The spot aimed to address this.

The spot was also runner-up in the Oneworld/UNICEF childrens lives/childrens' voices competition.
