Strengthening Lifeline Media in Regions of Conflict - Global
Lifeline Media is a project of the Radio Partnership of the International Centre for Humanitarian Reporting (ICHR/RP), the Geneva-based NGO which promotes a more effective use of media as a tool in development and conflict situations.
Communication Strategies
Lifeline Media is a 3-phased project which includes: field research to determine the key players and innovative projects involved in media and peace-building activities, and a literature search to identify resources in the field; an international workshop bringing together media and conflict resolution practitioners to help identify "best-practice" in the use of media for peace-building; and a publication on the findings of the Lifeline Media research and workshop which will appear in a Media and Conflict Handbook for Practitioners in summer 1999.
Development Issues
Peace.
Key Points
ICHR/RP's search indicated that there is ample information and articles written about journalism in war zones, reporting "peace" and the need for accurate reporting in conflict situations, but very little in terms of pro-active or interventionist media and the role this might play in peace-building. Much research has focused on the negative impact of media, rather than the potential positive impact of well-thought and constructed media projects.
Partners
International Centre for Humanitarian Reporting / Radio Partnership. Workshop was held in partnership with the South African Media Peace Centre.
