Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) and the Global Public-Private Partnership for Handwashing (PPPHW) invites participants to register for the "#TouchingLives School Talent International Contest".  The contest intends to recognise all contestants who use their artistic talents to promote proper hand washing.

Students under 25 years of age, working individually or in groups, from all the countries in the Americas are encouraged to register and send a copy of their songs, videos, illustrations, written compositions, or any other expression of art promoting hand washing.

Winners will be acknowledged based on these three categories:

  • Creativity;
  • Impact and persuasive message of hand washing; and
  • Popularity - measured by the rating average given by individuals visiting the contest website.

Each artistic piece must include a message related to hand washing.

Winners will receive:

  • An accredited certificate signed by the Director of PAHO/WHO, which will be officially awarded through the PAHO/WHO office in the corresponding country.
  • The schools which the winning students attend will receive an accredited plate, signed by the Director of PAHO/WHO.
  • The winning entries will be disseminated by PAHO through their website and social networks.
