Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText

This World Bank video on solid waste disposal in Ghana explains the root causes of solid waste contamination in urban Ghana resulting from rapid economic development. It explains the link between diseases like cholera and malaria that result from open dumping of garbage that exacerbates disease conditions, particular in the rainy seasons. The video shows the use of information and communication technology (ICT) tools to pressure municipal governments to address the problems. These include the use of mobile phones and the cameras they contain to post images and reports of sanitation needs and websites addressed to municipal authorities.

World Bank representatives acknowledge the struggle for municipalities to locate funds for services. The World Bank recommendations involve transparency in the expenditure of budgets, including web posting of budgets that will show the redirection of money to waste disposal, among other municipal services to document for citizens the efforts of municipalities to provide services.
