Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

West African Volunteers for Agro-Industrial Development (WAVAID)

The purpose of West African Volunteers for Agro-Industrial Development (WAVAID), a volunteer task force, is to:
  • Organise and provide services that enable access to information about agricultural and rural development in West Africa
  • Strengthen the orientation of established farmers and foster the development of new farmer/entrepenueurs to increase agricultural production for export markets

In short, the objective of WAVAID is to mobilise the economic activities of existing rural farmers toward profitable commercial production. This effort involves a providing information to old and new farmers alike on science-led farming techniques.
Communication Strategies

By empowering farmers as well as providing information, WAVAID offers direct support for capacity building and thus assists in disseminating and replicating successful agricultural processes. It consists of a board of trustees that is made up of international agriculturists, rural sociologists, engineers, and economists and that is supported by a governing council with a country director in each of its 17-member Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS) countries. There is also a reserve list of volunteers across the West African sub-region.

Development Issues

Agriculture, Economic Development.

Key Points

One challenge facing West African farmers in the sub-region is how to position themselves firmly in the mainstream of world international trade. This challenge is complicated by the fact that West African countries face multi-dimensional changes due to socio-economic growth, political development, and urbanisation.
