Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

young-minds.net/lessons learnt: Student Participation, Action and Cross-Cultural Collaboration in a

SummaryText
In this 140-page book, the authors discuss research findings from an international web-based educational project in which students from four different countries in Europe worked together on issues concerning youth, culture and the use of alcohol. The project explored three key themes:
  • Students' genuine participation and action as prerequisites for developing ownership of learning.
  • Cross-cultural collaboration as a precondition for understanding one's own practice and culture and for developing a sensitivity to otherness.
  • Information and communication technology (ICT) as a democratic, networked learning environment built around learning communities and interactions that transcend the limits of space and time.
The findings indicate that ICT can play a significant role in health education in schools. The authors suggest that teachers as responsible dialogue partners in learning processes play a crucial role in unlocking the potential and commitment of young people to deal with health issues.

"young-minds.net/lessons learnt" is written for researchers, teachers, and health promotion professionals interested in knowing how to involve young people in issues that concern their lives.
