Young Broadcaster Training Programme - Azerbaijan
In April 2003, Internews Azerbaijan launched a project to introduce basic television journalism skills to high school students in Baku. Twelve students were trained in collaboration with local NGO partner Dahi, a student exchange organisation.
Communication Strategies
Internews and Dahi representatives first interviewed approximately 300 high school students in order to select the 12 most promising candidates. "We wanted to learn more about their motivation, their future plans, and, most importantly, to determine if they were really interested in studying journalism," said Kenan Guluzade, a member of the selection panel and producer of the Internews-sponsored weekly television programme "Perekrestok" ("Crossroads").
During the 2-month course, the participants learned about effective reporting, interviewing, camera shooting, and editing techniques. With the help of Internews professionals, students gained knowledge and hands-on experience in all aspects of the production process.
The training culminated in the preparation of one entire episode of "Crossroads" in May 2003 in celebration of International Children's Day. "Crossroads" offers news and features from Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Armenia, with the goal of enabling information exchange among these 3 countries of the South Caucasus.
