Voices of Arab Youth - Middle East
In 2001, the BBC World Service Education and UNICEF launched a 20-part radio series identifying and exploring the central concerns, problems, and issues facing young people in the Middle East. Objectives included:
This project closely involved young people in a broadcasting initiative centred around conveying their hopes and concerns for the future, and identifying opportunities for realising their visions. The 20, 15-minute-long radio programmes were intended to reach youth living in all Arabic-speaking countries in the Middle East.
In addition to radio, this programme featured a website that provided a news link, youth debate forum, and additional information about key topics raised in the programmes.
UNICEF linked this project to a series of meetings with young people who were part of a global youth network - culminating in the United Nations Special Session on Children took place in New York (USA) in May 2002 (click here for further details on that event).
- creating a direct forum for Arab youth to have a voice
- setting up and sustaining a new community of listenership across young people in the Arab world, fostering links between different nations and religious faiths
- communicating issues and concerns that are important to these young people
- providing an information and support route post-broadcast.
