Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Giramahoro We Are the Future Youth Centre - Rwanda

The Giramahoro We Are the Future Youth Centre provides training for youth and children in the sectors of health, information communications technology (ICT), nutrition and sports. Giramahoro means "have peace" in Kinyarwanda, the language of Rwanda.
Communication Strategies
The centre opened in April 2004 and since its opening, the Giramahoro, in collaboration with the Glocal Forum, has launched a technology programme that includes a computer lab with 15 computers, as well as scanners, printers and web cameras.

It provides basic training in computer use and maintenance. The center has an upcoming online project, called "reconciliation programme" which will serve as a discussion forum on the genocide moderated by academics and social support groups. The organisers say they expect to launch a "micro-garden" project designed with the Food and Agriculture Organisation at the centre.

Key Points
The organisers believe the Giramahoro centre is a sign of hope and healing for a community that still struggles with rebuilding after conflict and violence. "The Centre represents the healing and promising future of the city and its youth: the structure has been rebuilt as a children's centre after nearly being destroyed during the genocide that ravaged the country in 1994."
