Zambia Community Radio Project (ZCRP)
The Zambian Community Radio Project was a pilot educational project designed to mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS to the vulnerable communities through the use of community radio. ZCRP works with established local Eastern Province Radio Stations to produce and broadcast a radio series entitled “In Our Village”.
Communication Strategies
In Our Village is a topical radio show broadcast in three local languages, Chewa, Chinyanja and Tumbuka. The projec’s radio programmes are tailored to give villages an opportunity to demonstrate how they deal with problems associated with HIV/AIDS.
Each week, the show highlights community success stories with a view towards encouraging replication of successful activities in other villages. Its messages are tailored to explain how and why activities were started, and how they have been maintained.
Each show concentrates issues sush as HIV/AIDS, women, children, education, income generation, food security, agriculture and environmental health. The programme recordings are done at villages featured on the show in order to give a feeling of pride and add entertainment value.
The project organisers said over 50 listener groups were formed in Chadidza, Chipata, Katete, Sinda, Mfuwe and Lundazi. Each group monitors shows through donated wind up radio.
