Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Communities Taking Charge of Their Health

SummaryText
Published in 2002, this 20-page booklet tells the story of the India Local Initiatives Program (India-LIP), detailing its beginnings, its implementation, and its prospects for continuing to help India's poor achieve better health. Based on a model adapted from Bangladesh and Indonesia, India-LIP trained almost 2,000 community health volunteers; cooperated with the government to use existing clinics, supplies, drugs, and staff; and provided reproductive and child health services to over 200,000 individuals. The programme is made possible by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Management Science for Health (MSH), and Technical Assistance Incorporated (TAI), as well as three Indian non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

Individual copies of the booklet are available free of charge in Africa, Asia, and Latin America; orders from North America, Western Europe, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand are US$7. Discounts apply to orders of 5 or more copies.
