Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Radio CDC - South Africa

Radio CDC is an NGO in Johannesburg providing pre-packaged programming and live national call-ins, via satellite, to 21 community radio stations in all 9 South African provinces.
Communication Strategies

They are currently putting together a "Peace Radio" programme series in which they will do short radio documentaries and call-ins on political violence (United Democratic Movement (UDM) v. ANC) in the Greenfields and Mandela Park informal settlements next to Johannesburg. They will also focus on continuing ANC-Inkatha tension in KwaZulu-Natal, and ANC-UDM tension in the Western Cape and the Transkei, and look at the spate of killings of police officers in the past year, and the rise in vigilante justice in various townships.
Development Issues

Rights, political development.
Key Points

All stations receiving pre-packaged programming from Radio CDC are members of "SACRIN," the South African Community Radio Information Network. SACRIN is a joint project by Radio CDC and the National Community Radio Forum (NCRF). Radio CDC produces and distributes all SACRIN audio and script programming, at Radio CDC studios in Johannesburg.
