Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Reproductive Health Package - Pakistan

The World Population Foundation (WPF), Pakistan, contracted the NGO Health Education and Literacy (HEAL) Trust to develop a package of pictures and stories on reproductive health. Developed from July 2000 to January 2001, the pamphlet was written in three local languages (Urdu, Pashtoo, and Sindhi). It was designed to be used by HEAL's nine partner NGOs to educate Pakistanis in rural communities, facilitating discussion on topics such as safe motherhood, infertility, HIV/ AIDS, child spacing, safe abortion, and child survival.
Communication Strategies
The package included booklets with photographs of villagersin a rural area and some (particularly the HIV/AIDS booklet) with manual illustrations. Those photographed agreed to participate after being counselled about the importance of reproductive health. HEAL also facilitated a workshop led by the WPF to teach its partner NGOs to use the package of materials.
