Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Open Game - Uruguay

This was a project of the health team of the Instituto de Investigación y Desarrollo (IDES) in Uruguay. The interactive strategy approach used in this programme consists of an open game that may be modified depending on the situation and topic which is at hand. This is a result of years of joint learning with community groups, and attempts to reach people on an emotional level, linking people, respecting diversity and do not marginalise those affected with the disease.
Communication Strategies

These games are used in training courses, workshops, seminars, and advisory groups in Uruguay, Brazil and Argentina. Each of the AIDS prevention strategies revolves around a didactic game based on cards, ludo, dominoes, and table or board games.
Development Issues

HIV/AIDS, condom use, socio-cultural aspects of AIDS and living with AIDS.
Key Points

The Open Game has three main features, it adapts to the socio-cultural situation of each group, it is flexible enough to stress different themes and it reflects and incorporates the many voices, thoughts and experiences of the participants. The most important feature is that is is adaptable and interactive, incorporating prejudices, feelings, assumptions and practices of individuals and entire regions.
