WETV World’s Fair Project - Europe
WETV Television, a Canadian-based producer of television programming on issues of sustainable human development, is broadcasting twice-weekly programmes to European television audiences on the ASTRA direct-to-home TV network from studios at EXPO2000, the Hannover, Germany World Exposition. Broadcasts began in the beginning of July and will end at the end of the fair in October 2000.
Communication Strategies
WETV is producing two half-hour programmes each week, called Welcome to the Global Village, on the Fair's themes of "Humankind, Nature & Technology: A New World Arising." See details and clips on WETV's website, www.wetv.com which also features a Question of the Week, tied in to a global public opinion survey. This week's question: "As we enter the new millennium, what do you think should be the most important goal for your country over the next ten years?" The programs are in English only, and cover all aspects of sustainable development. Excerpts will be made available to television broadcasters in developing countries later this year as part of WETV's regular programming to those partners.
Development Issues
Global sustainable development, general development issues, technology.
Key Points
The Hannover Exposition is the biggest yet, but suffers from flagging attendance and is little known in North America, partly because the US refused to participate. Critics question whether World Fair's are still relevant in today's wired world.
Partners
WETV is a partnership-based venture which has been supported by many national aid agencies, the United Nations family and development NGOs.
