Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText

"Integrating gender perspectives into social movements and activism is not just about 'including' women or 'thinking about' men and gender minorities but, rather, considering what a gendered politics provides in terms of alternative ways of being, seeing and doing that in themselves serve to transform patriarchal power relations."

Launched in September 2013, this website on gender and social movements offers ways of accessing a range of resources from over 3 years of research on this theme by the BRIDGE team at the Institute of Development Studies (IDS). BRIDGE has undertaken a collaborative approach, driven by an expert advisory group and actively involving communities of practice made up of over 100 activists and scholars from a range of global regions and social movements. The purpose of this website and the BRIDGE Cutting Edge programme on gender and social movements (with the report and brief that emerged) is to inspire and help build more effective, gender-just social movements, better able to create positive transformation and equality for all.

In the BRIDGE overview report and brief on gender and social movements, and in other materials on this website, "you'll find recommendations on how gender-just movements can be built, experiences of the challenges faced by gender equality advocates in different movements when they try to promote women's rights and gender justice within their movements, and ideas for further work and activity on this topic." The website offers a range of multimedia materials on gender and social movements, meaning visitors can:
