Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

AF-AIDS email network - Africa

As a pre-cursor to the Durban World AIDS Conference in the year 2000, this project was established as a means to increase electronic networking in a partnership building exercise in Africa. The focus of this programme was to reach and connect key NGO health and policy personnel in different countries to share information about treatment and prevention of HIV and AIDS in highly focused groups.
Communication Strategies

In each of five African nations, training and technology provision enabled individuals to act as information sharers on the African AF-AIDS e-mail based network.

Key Points

The Fondation du Présent was established to coordinate the project. Often the key people who work in HIV/AIDS response work are both geographically and technically isolated from information, for this reason, putting these people in touch with high-quality information and input became a priority for the group. This network can also be used by anyone with full Internet access.
