Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Afrihealth Optonet Association (AOA) is a Nigerian non-governmental organisation (NGO) involved in health and development research, policy analysis, community intervention, and public education. Its objectives include:
  • advocating and mobilising for the general health of the community and society
  • providing health information and education
  • conducting research on healthcare issues including maternal and child health, population, nutrition, and the environment
  • intervening with relevant services to promote health for the whole family and society.
Communication Strategies
The organisation is made up of three community-focused agencies: Afrihealth Information Projects, Optonet International, and Global Allies for Health and Development in Africa (GAHADA) with interests in the health and social well-being of local communities. Afrihealth Information Projects is a community-focused non-profit humanitarian agency of AOA, involved in information, research, intervention, and education, with maternal and child health, reproductive health/family planning, and population and environment as its main areas of interest.

The organisation says it achieves its goals through awareness raising, workshops, seminars, capacity building, and gender training sessions. Developing people's capacity to help themselves is emphasised here. AOA also provides honourary awards to deserving people or organisations. Documentation/publishing, networking, lobbying, and institutional support are additional areas of focus. Other activities include participatory rural appraisal (PRA) in an effort to foster integrated rural development.

In all its work, AOA strives to develop an approach that is bottom-up, people-specific, gender-sensitive, and participatory.
