AMIC Young Communicators Network (AYCN)

While AYCN has components that are popular with web 2.0 portals and sites, it is meant to be a niche area in which students of media can network and access information on a range of media topics and non-media topics such as climate change, water and sanitation, and so on. Registration is free, and access to all sections of the site is unlimited. The resource platform is designed to provide young communicators and journalists from all over Asia with expertise and information for their passion and future career. It includes diverse journals and communication papers from AMIC, as well as information about journalism in Asia and news and links for those seeking to enter the profession.
AMIC also hosts online contests for AYCN members. For example, the Freedom of Young Media Online Competition for young journalists from Asia and Europe asked young journalists 30 years old and younger to upload their articles, video- or audio-files, photos, etc. (prior to September 20 2009). The competition has three categories: What does "freedom of young media" mean to you and your media? How are you reporting on "freedom of young media" in your media? What challenges regarding "freedom of young media" are you facing in your work? Information and communication technology (ICT)-related prizes are designed to further the work of young communicators, and the awards ceremony - slated to take place during the "European Youth Media Days" in October in the European Parliament in Brussels - will bring the winners together with approximately 200 young European journalists.
Youth, Media Development.
Based in Singapore, AMIC is a non-profit non-governmental organisation (NGO) with the mission of spearhearding the development of media and communication expertise in Asia within the broad framework of economic, social, and cultural progress. AMIC exists to encourage ethical and social responsibility of the media to support democratic access and participation in media development and production, and to provide opportunities for empowerment of disadvantaged sectors in the communication/media environment. As a research centre, it examines critical issues in the media and the communication sector and their implications for development. As a resource centre it gathers and disseminates knowledge about communications and its effects in Asia. And, by conducting training and professional consultations, it is active in capacity-building for the media and their users.
