Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Campaign against a Europe for Capital and War - Panagea, Spain

In March 2002 in Panagea, Spain, almost half a million Barcelonans marched against the war on terrorism and the domination of capital.
Communication Strategies
A coalition of over one hundred local organisations led a demonstration against the European Union Heads of Government Summit that was being held in the city.

Pangea Association for Progressive Communications (APC) member in Spain, was part of the coalition, and contributed the creation of a website -- in Spanish only -- and an online calendar.
Development Issues
Conflict, Rights, Political Development, Social Development.
Key Points
The Campaign seeks to create a new Europe in which: the market no longer controls the economy; citizens' social needs are satisfied and their cultural and environmental values are protected; the liberty and the equality of all persons, globally, are respected; democractic participation is a reality; the promotion of world peace is on the agenda; universal justice is sought in a very practical way, for instance through the immediate abolition of the external debt of impoverished countries; the planet and all creatures are valued; and a healthy diet is considered a right rather than a business.

Despite extraordinary security measures, warnings of violence, and actions that some described as efforts to sully the demonstration by linking it to terrorism, the march was peaceful and was attended by 400,000-500,000 people.
