Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

COMEdo Survey - Zambia

COMEdo (Community Media Development Organisation) is carrying out a survey of the state of community media in Zambia. The survey has started (Jan. 1999) and will cover the Kabwata, Kanyama and Chawama constituencies in Lusaka, the capitol city. The survey will finish in March 1999.
Communication Strategies

The survey will involve meetings and surveys with community based organisations (CBOs), NGO's, members of the donor community, government officials and other interested parties like the established media. It seeks to examine and assess the political environment in relation to the development of community media and explore target groups' vulnerability and capacities in terms of technical know-how, skills and abilities to run, manage and control community media. The study is also aimed at reviewing and assessing the vulnerability and potential of local structures to promote and support community media and recommend both short-term and long-term actions and programmes for implementing media.
Development Issues

Community media.
Key Points

One of the main objectives is the creation of awareness on the situation of community media in Zambia. Results will be published into a document, which will be likened to Zambia's Bible on the development of community media.
