Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Communications Collective of Montes de María Línea 21 (Colectivo de Comunicaciones Montes de María Línea 21)

Colectivo de Comunicaciones Montes de María Línea 21 promotes a democratic culture through spaces of civic participation for children and youth in order to build socialisation linkages instead of a culture of war and conflict. The main objective of this collective is to position these young people as key social actors through their involvement in community development processes by means of media research, production and delivery of programmes.
Communication Strategies
The collective works through two directives: peace education and citizenship. It supports these directives by offering training and creating the necessary spaces of impact beginning with the youths own lives and experiences: the street, the school, the barrio, the town center, and their own stories and history.

Young journalist and professionals in communication, childhood and education constitute the training support and production groups. With 18 staff members, 508 workshops have been conducted as well as 47 education sessions. 3,570 boys and girls, 990 young people, 150 parents and 80 school teachers from Montes de María and other villages nearby have attended these events.
Development Issues
Education, Children, Youth, Human Rights.
Key Points
As result of these activities and projects young people and children in Montes de María have the opportunity to participate in the local media and become involved in research dealing with their own region and localities. The trainings have also improved their reading and writing abilities and also developed conditions within the community for rejecting a "war culture" and dealing with conflict.
