COMVIDA - Honduras
A programme using both low-scale and mass communication to promote child and youth health. This project was commenced in the context of very high rates of HIV/AIDS and a social taboo on open discussion of sexual topics. The objective was to support community efforts to communicate different perspectives on sexual health issues.
Communication Strategies
The major activities include school dramas, a festival of plays (all written and performed by youth), film shows, discussions, local radio and television programming, posters and special events.
Development Issues
HIV/AIDS, other health issues, youth health and community involvement
Key Points
This is very important for Honduras because it has the highest rates of HIV/AIDS in Latin America. Sex workers are very common and introduced to boys at a very young age by those that they look up to (ex. fathers), sex violence and STD's are also very common. Open discussion on sexual issues is prevented due to religious concerns, preventing formal education.
