Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Eesti Terisekasvatuse Keskus - Estonia

Through the development of a national action plan starting in 1993, this partnership project aimed to provide the country with a clear path for health promotion. By establishing a national centre for health promotion called the ETK (Eesti Terisekasvatuse Keskus), partnership building and local projects were effectively implemented. Skills in essential areas of networking, international collaboration and the use of information technology were established firmly within the communication for development community.
Communication Strategies

The programme established an infrastructure for health promotion development in it's first phase and carried a series of 16 workshops for local projects and partnership building in the second phase.

Key Points

Some of the practical steps that were taken to help the project to progress included the creation of a joint action plan, setting consensus quality standards for planning, implementation and evaluation of projects, focussing on key tasks and the information flow between all relevant parties involved. This project worked to achieve a well-informed group of health promotion managers while involving county physicians and public health specialists in the process of increasing networking capability and international collaboration.
