Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

English Is Fun

This BBC World Service Trust English language radio series is designed to help young Cambodians learn English. "English is Fun", is intended for complete beginners and focuses on developing listening, speaking, and pronunciation skills. The 15-minute programme, featuring a young Khmer presenter, follows the day-to-day life of a Cambodian girl called Devi. The 40-part radio series was funded by the Nippon Foundation of Japan and coordinated by local non-governmental organisation (NGO) ESC Kizuna.
Communication Strategies

Listeners learn from native speakers of English with the help of the presenter, who explains the new language in each episode. Each programme goes out 4 times a week to give students a chance to listen again. It has been designed to complement the national curriculum used in grade 7 in Cambodia. A textbook and pack of teachers' notes have been produced to allow students and teachers to do follow-up learning activities in a classroom setting after listening to the radio broadcast. These will be distributed to pilot schools in Phnom Penh and the northern provinces of Stung Treng and Preah Vihear.

Explaining the approach adopted in the programme, the series producer Finn Aberdein said, in part: "English is Fun utilises the power of radio to give young Cambodian learners across the country the chance to hear English as it's actually spoken by native speakers....Instead of generic situations,...we learn how to talk about things like local food and festivals."
