Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

The impactAFRICA fund is making available US$500,000 in a series of contests to support "pioneering data journalism and innovative reporting that tackles development issues, such as public healthcare, in six African countries: Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania and Zambia."

impactAFRICA is an initiative of Code for Africa (CfAfrica) and the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) that seeks to spur newsroom experimentation and innovative storytelling, while also encouraging more evidence-based public discourse.

Cash prizes will be offered for proposals focusing on in-depth reportage into hidden, neglected, or under-reported health and development issues and will be awarded in three rounds: the focus of the latest and upcoming round is on water and sanitation issues.

Prizes will be awarded in the following categories:

  • Best investigative report
  • Best data-driven story
  • Best service journalism

Prizes also include technology assistance from Code for Africa's software labs in all six countries, as well as one-on-one editorial mentoring, digital skills training, and content syndication services.

Application Info

Registration information:

Stories published about water or sanitation issues in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania or Zambia between March 30 and the July 15 are eligible. While the stories need to focus on issues in these six countries, the stories can have been published/broadcast anywhere in the world.

impactAFRICA is open to applications from teams of journalists or news innovators from all across the world, but all project teams should include members from their target country, to ensure local context and local involvement in the storytelling. Proposals for projects that entail a series of reports in multiple media outlets are particularly welcome. A skills programme is also available and is open to anyone who wants to participate (not just those who submit proposals).
