Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Limpopo River Awareness Kit

An initiative of the Limpopo Watercourse Commission (LIMCOM), the Limpopo River Awareness Kit (Limpopo RAK) is an online and CD-ROM-based tool designed to support capacity development and raise awareness related to transboundary water issues in Southern Africa. It is designed to be a central focal point for knowledge related to the Limpopo River basin, as well as serve as a hub for information management and dissemination for LIMCOM and its member states.

Communication Strategies

The kit provides information under four key themes: the river basin, people and the river, governance, and resource management. According to the project website, the structure of the Limpopo RAK (themes and chapters) was defined through participatory processes involving stakeholders from all four basin states of the Limpopo River basin.

The river basin theme contains specific information about the geography of the Limpopo River basin, it's climate and weather, hydrology, ecology, and biodiversity. It also contains summaries about the various sub-basins along the main river basin via an interactive map.

The second theme explores the diverse cultures, livelihoods, and the dependency that people in the Limpopo basin have on the environment. This includes discussions of the various histories, cultures and ways of life, the socioeconomics in the basin, the relationship between the environment and peoples' well-being, and human development initiatives in the area.

The governance theme of the kit is designed to provide an overview of water governance in terms of transboundary water management. The theme gives an overview of the main concepts and issues related to water governance before looking specifically at the situation in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Limpopo River Basin.

The fourth and final theme includes information on water demand, including demand management, conservation and re-use; water infrastructure such as dams, small scale supply, and groundwater, as well as infrastructure for irrigation; the value of water, including economic valuation, and perspectives on the future outlook; and resource monitoring.

Interactive features of the online tool include the basin and sub-basin maps, a virtual water map that shows the virtual water trade and water footprints of all SADC countries, a clickable map of dams in the Limpopo basin, and a video tour of the Limpopo river that features excerpts from the four-part documentary series "Bridging Waters." It also includes demographic and river-related information for each country the Limpopo flows through.
