Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Local Government on the Radio Waves

Local Government on the Radio Waves is a radio programme that was designed to teach newly elected local government officials about democratic principles and good governance. First Voice and World Bank Institute (WBI) launched the programme in March 2003.
Communication Strategies

Working with the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), WBI produced a series of Interactive Radio Instruction (IRI) programmes on a wide range of topics including civic participation, women's leadership, anti-corruption, justice and the rule of law, taxation, and resource management.

The series is broadcast weekly on the Africa Learning Channel (ALC) directly to project sites throughout Malawi. Programme scripts and other support materials are transmitted concurrently on the Multimedia Service, which enables teachers, health care providers, local government officials, international aid workers, and others to download detailed text and data directly from the AfriStar satellites to their personal computers.
