Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

MediaSnackers

MediaSnackers was initially launched in 2006 as a website/weblog/project/call to action for those interested in how young people consume and create media across the globe. It has since shifted its focus toward a consultancy and training initiative with the mission of giving people of all ages the knowledge and skills to use social media. MediaSnackers draws on information and communication technologies (ICTs) as well as in-person interactions to explore and build capacity in the use of new media and technology opportunities for young people and others.
Communication Strategies

In its trainings, publications, and consultations, MediaSnackers takes a holistic approach to social media, with the aim of ensuring that there is a broad understanding of all the complementary online/technology components. The approach involves hands-on learning from doing. For example, MediaSnackers' "Digital Journalists" course focuses on enabling young people to have an effective online voice through blogging, digital storytelling, podcasting, and vodcasting. The "Digital Detectives" course challenges participants to use the Worldwide Web as an investigative platform around specific themes. Responses are collated using online spaces as participants learn to explore the validity of sources plus collaborate to create their own digital answers. a course for professionals working within the youth arena mirrors the youth training, with highly visual, interactive activities that are designed to immerse attendees in emerging technologies and media whilst offering insights into the application of such activities.

MediaSnackers has offered a series of pro-bono projects, described here. For instance, MediaSnackers provided support for the 5th World Summit on Media and Children event by training young people to both use video equipment and interview the participants of the event.
