Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

The Men and Gender Equality Policy Project (MGEPP)

0 comments

The Men and Gender Equality Policy Project (MGEPP), led by Instituto Promundo and the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW), was a multi-year (2007-2011), multi-country effort to build the evidence base on how to engage men in health, social development, and gender equality. The multiple research components of the project aimed to provide policymakers and non-governmental organisation (NGO) partners with evidence-based strategies for engaging men in gender equality, particularly in the areas of sexual and reproductive health, ending gender-based violence, fatherhood and maternal and child health, and men’s health needs.

Communication Strategies

Project activities included the following:

  1. A multi-country scan of policies for the degree to which they seek to include men from a gender perspective, presented in the publication What Men Have to Do with it: Public Policies to Promote Gender Equality;
  2. The International Men and Gender Equality Survey (IMAGES), a quantitative household survey carried out with men and women in seven countries in 2009-2011, initial results of which are presented in the publication Evolving Men: Initial Results from the International Men and Gender Equality Survey (IMAGES) (please see the Related Summaries below);
  3. The Men Who Care study, consisting of in-depth qualitative life history interviews with men involved in non-traditional caregiving roles in five countries, presented in this publication (please see the Related Summaries below); and
  4. Advocacy efforts and dissemination of the findings from these different components via various formats.

Participating countries in the project included Brazil, Chile, Croatia, India, Mexico, Rwanda, Tanzania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and South Africa.

Key Points

The International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) is a global research institute with headquarters in Washington, D.C., United States (US), and regional offices in Nairobi, Kenya, and New Delhi, India. On efforts such as the transform of unequal and harmful social norms that undermine the well-being of women and girls, as well as men and boys, the ICRW collaborates with partners to conduct research and policy analysis on the role men and boys play in empowering women and achieving gender equality. Through their findings, they identify opportunities for redefining certain notions about what it means to be a man and changing men's behaviours related to violence, sexual, and reproductive health, and maternal and child health. They also work to build evidence on how to expand effective programmes that engage men and boys so they may have a greater impact on more people.

Founded in 1997, Instituto Promundo is a Brazilian NGO based in Rio de Janeiro that seeks to promote gender equality and end violence against women, children, and youth. Based in Washington, DC, US, Promundo-US is a separately incorporated organisation that collaborates with Instituto Promundo on international advocacy, programme development, and communications. Promundo works locally, nationally and internationally to:

  • Conduct research related to gender equality and health;
  • Implement and evaluate programmes that seek to promote positive changes in gender norms and behaviours among individuals, families, and communities; and
  • Advocate for the integration of these initiatives and a perspective of gender equality in public policies.
