Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Nari Jibon Domestic Violence Programme

Nari Jibon Domestic Violence programme provides services and information to women on domestic violence programmes in both Bangladesh and USA. The programme includes the development of publications, a website, and training for women.
Communication Strategies
The Nari Jibon Project was developed to create awareness as well as help develop alternative skills for women in Bangladesh. The programme includes the following.
  • Nari Jibon school - provides classes in computers (common applications and graphics, repair and setup), English, tailoring, Bangla, and business set up and operation. These classes are open to women workers, students, housewives, and women seeking new skills and alternative work. The school seeks to provide a bridge and links to work where women can use these skills in non-governmental organisations (NGOs), offices, businesses, tailoring shops, and other settings.
  • Nari Jibon Website - provides information and links on domestic violence programmes and shelters in Bangladesh with links to South Asian programmes and shelters in the USA. The website includes dowloadable Bangla and English brochures, links to the specific programmes and shelters, and a list of English language news articles, research, and websites on domestic violence in Bangladesh, South Asians in USA, and some international websites.
  • Publications - a range of publications, including brochures and posters, have been developed to help raise awareness as well as provide women with information about services and where to access assistance if they experience domestic violence. The posters have been displayed at a wide range places where women frequent.
The programme aims to provide information to women in both Bangladesh and USA, and provide a link between the two countries. For example, if someone in the USA requires information on Bangladeshi laws, shelters, and programmes, they can contact the programmes listed in the brochures and websites. They may also request brochures.
