North American Center for Environmental Information and Communication (CICEANA)
The North American Center for Environmental Information and Communication (CICEANA) is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation whose aim is to foster a culture that promotes sustainable development. Working in Mexico City, Mexico, CICEANA supports this mission by offering information, continuing education, community-based projects, and consulting services to the general public.
Communication Strategies
CICEANA provides environmental education. First, it offers environmental activities and education through school field trips and student visits that are designed to promote environmental awareness. Examples of such activities include guided tours on a marked trail in the Viveros de Coyoacan park; mobile workshops that bring environmental topics and issues to public and private schools; and half-day workshops on biodiversity, climactic change, sustainable consumption, recycling, pollution, water resources management, and urban agriculture. Second, it provides training for environmental educators and others through courses, workshops, lectures, environmental fairs, CD-ROMs, and the production of educational materials. This training focusses on the application of sustainable environmental technologies, as well as the development of web pages, environmental databases, and internet use.
Through tools including the internet and its ecological video library, CICEANA provides information. It hosts a centre that is equipped with computers and open to the general public. The CICEANA site includes an Environmental Information portal (in Spanish language only). In addition, CICEANA's video library includes over 2,800 videos dealing with ecology, environmental education, sustainable development, science, and technology and culture. In addition to selling and renting these videos and organising video debates at fairs and other events, CICEANA co-produces environmental videos.
Community-based ecological projects include green roof projects, construction and management of greenhouses, and development of alternative technologies such as compost modules.
