Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

The registration and abstract submission process is now open for the Shifting Norms, Changing Behavior, Amplifying Voices: What Works? 2018 International Social and Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) Summit, which seeks to gather SBCC practitioners from around the globe to discuss the current practice and way forward for SBCC, featuring a special focus on entertainment education.

Where? Nusa Dua, Indonesia

When? April 16-20 2018

What is the Summit about? - SBCC engages and supports people to shift norms, change behaviours, and amplify the voices needed to address the persistent development challenges the world faces today: extreme poverty, gender inequities, public health emergencies, acute and chronic diseases, climate change, and democracy and governance among others. This conference is organised to understand better what works in shifting social norms, changing behaviours and amplifying the voice of those who have most at stake in the success of development efforts. It is also designed to wrestle with the profound issues of social justice and agenda setting that affect these decisions. The summit will include panel discussions and plenary sessions; a market fair to exhibit tools, methodologies, programmes and research; skills-building workshops; and "Comm Talks."

Who Should Attend? - The Summit is for anyone with an interest in furthering the science and art of SBCC, especially: practitioners, researchers, academia/students, NGO and CSO staff, donors, government ministry staff, and the private sector working on development and health issues.

Registration details - Click here  for more information on how to register. Discounted rates are available for early bird registrations. There will be some scholarship opportunities to support attendance.

Call for Abstracts - Concept notes for skill building workshops and abstracts for oral and poster presentations, panel presentations, Comm Talks, and the multimedia video showcase are being accepted until November 27, 2017.  Click here  for more information on submitting an abstract.
