Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Research and Consultation among Young People on Mental Health Issues

SummaryText
Released in 1997, this 130-page report details results of research in Australia to guide the development of prevention and early intervention projects addressing the mental health of young people. Conducted by Keys Young (now called Urbis Keys Young), the research was designed to evaluate the National Mental Health Strategy and the National Youth Suicide Prevention Strategy. The research examined the attitudes of young Australians about mental health matters, their help-seeking behaviour, education and resource needs, and their experiences when using mental health and related support services. The research programme consisted in focus group discussions; a national survey of children and young people; and focused qualitative work individually or in small groups with a range of specific sub-groups of young people with particular concerns.

The report explores the finding that schools, the media, and families are important avenues for information and support for young people. It also highlights the need for youth health and education services to work to understand mental health issues specific to young people. The findings of the research will be used as a basis for further development of mental health policy and national projects to address young people's mental health issues.
