Social Norms
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

The Russian AIDS Training & Community Development Project - Russia

Established by the Canada AIDS Russia Project (CARP), in partnership with Casey House Hospice (CHH) and others, this two-year project was launched in 1998 in an effort to provide assistance in training, technical support, and community development in support of Russia's Federal AIDS Program. The short-term project goals were to:
  • establish a professional network of Russian AIDS experts from federal, regional, and community-based groups;
  • establish an electronic system for project collaboration and online dissemination of AIDS information;
  • develop a new curriculum for HIV/AIDS training at the Medical Academy for Postgraduate Studies;
  • develop standards and recommendations for effective AIDS policies and practices; and
  • strengthen community initiatives in HIV/AIDS prevention and care.
The two long-term objectives included strengthening the Russian Federal AIDS Program's implementation of initiatives that conform to international standards and best practices and strengthening community participation in the Russian Federal AIDS Program.
Communication Strategies
Activities to support the Federal AIDS Program focussed on training and collaboration among AIDS professionals and community representatives and the development of practical recommendations for HIV/AIDS prevention and care. Community development activities were intended to promote the development of community-based capacity for HIV education, prevention, and care.

Partners

CARP and CHH received funding from the Canadian government through a two-year contribution from Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), Central and Eastern Europe Branch; the website is supported by the World Health Organization - Regional Office for Europe. Russian AIDS institutions participated, as did the Department of Infectious Diseases at the St. Petersburg Medical Academy for Postgraduate Medical Studies (MAPS) and the Russian Republican AIDS Centre in Ust-Igora, and the Botkin Hospital for Infectious Diseases No. 30 in St. Petersburg. The project also involved AIDS specialists and community representatives from seven geographic regions of Russia, including Ekaterinburg, Krasnodar, Leningrad Oblast, Nizhny Novgorod, Samara, Vologda, and Yamala-Nenetsk.
