Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Science Spaza Project

Science Spaza brings hands-on curriculum linked resources to science clubs in South Africa, with the goal of improving science literacy and exposing learners to science-related opportunities. The project is working to establish a network of science clubs in disadvantaged schools across the country, supported with resources and tools. It is an initiative of Jive Media Africa.

Communication Strategies

The Science Spaza project encourages and supports schools and communities to develop or create science clubs. These clubs are intended to be a space where learners can engage with science in a fun and interactive manner and where educators can get new ideas for practical science teaching. Clubs can register on the Science Spaza website to receive updates and additional resources - and from time to time the chance to participate in competitions and other initiatives.

Once registered clubs will receive a registration pack containing: a ring-binder file; posters to advertise meetings; name badges for members; and resources to start the first activities. These include entertaining activities, experiments and demonstrations which can be done with found objects, explanations, and curriculum links. The resources are intended to benefit both learners and educators. Members will also receive updates from time to time and opportunities to participate in competitions and other events.

In addition, Science Spaza arranges events such as talks and science shows where children can have the chance to meet science role models. For example during National Science Week in 2013, Spaza Science travelled to 30 schools to reach 15,000 learners with hands-on science.
