Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Virtual Community on Wireless Networking for Developing Countries - Global

The RadioCommunications Unit of the Aeronomy and Radiopropagation Laboratory (ARPL) at the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics Strada (ICTP) has launched a virtual community to explore wireless networking for developing countries. Four different public forums are meant to serve as a meeting point for people interested in learning, discussing, and investigating these technologies.
Communication Strategies
Organisers have established forums to develop a community of interested persons who may share ideas and make connections through the Internet. By participating in these forums on the Virtual Community site, people may exchange strategies related to using wireless technology to "connect" people in developing countries.

Specifically,
  1. The "Wireless" forum focusses on requests, hints, and ideas regarding WiFi equipment, radio links design and setup, antennas for 2.4 and 5 GHz, 802.11 protocols, long distance links, and the like.
  2. The "Wireless and Open Source Projects in Developing Countries" forum focusses on proposals, requests, information, and announcements concerning new or existing projects that use wireless and/or open source technology in developing countries.
  3. The "Networking" forum is the place for discussion of requests, answers, and suggestions about Network design, setup, configuration and administration, and Internet services using Linux and open source technology.
  4. The "Linux and Open Source" forum is meant to address anything related to GNU/Linux and Open Source Software.
This Virtual Community is open to anyone interested in submitting questions, answers, proposals, and ideas related to these topics. By inviting perspectives from many different kinds of people, organisers hope to facilitate a wider sharing of knowledge and skills and to create a point of contact among experts and interested persons.
