Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Water Safety & Hygiene Promotion is a project of the Water Action, a non-profit organisation that aims to improve the livelihood of the poor in Ethiopia through access to safe and adequate water supply facilities.

The project is located in Sinana district, Bale zone of the Oromia regional state, Ethiopia, 430 km south east of Addis Ababa. It serves 13 peasant associations (PAs), a zonal town, two small towns and two agricultural research centres. The organisers say the project plans to serve the 64,884 population with water supply services, sanitation facilities and proper hygiene practices throughout the design period.
Communication Strategies
The project integrates both the hardware and the software components of water supply, sanitation hygiene promotion as well as community capacity building activities.

The organisers say the overall objective of the project is to help reduce poverty. It involves the fight against rural poverty through development programmes that provide safe and adequate water supplies, hygiene education, sanitation and natural resources protection and development. All project activities are based on a participatory approach.

The project has the following features:
  • hardware and the software components of water supply, sanitation hygiene promotion,
  • community capacity-building activities,
  • integrated rural and urban water supply systems, with a design involving branch and grid pipe network systems,
  • cost–effectiveness, with only 122 ETB or USD 14.2 per capita cost,
  • very large coverage, but simple technology,
  • benefits for 126,000 people,
  • 147 km of pipe network, with a simple gravity flow from three potential spring sources emerging from foot of Mount Bale, and
  • no pumping station or associated fuel cost, as it has a simple ORM system.
